All members and affiliate members in both private and public sector are covered by the NPAQ Professional Indemnity insurance policy. This includes Register and Enrolled employee nurses (some restrictions on midwives), Allied Health professionals, Assistants in Nursing, Personal Carers and Administration staff. See further information - We will represent and support you in any work related matter. Private Sector If any private sector employee nurse member is named in an action by a third party or by their employer, both legal support and a PI Insurance policy is in place to protect you. The NPAQ legal support and PI insurance policy will have you covered. Public Sector If a Queensland Health nurse member is named in an action by a third party or by Queensland Health itself, the Queensland Government Indemnity Guideline  theoretically comes into play. The Public Service and Other Legislation (Civil Liability) Amendment Act 2014 indemnifies Queensland Health nurses from any civil liability. However the real concern for members is that the HR people, the managers and administrators may attempt to prevent this indemnity from being invoked. There are a number of ways they could attempt to do this and unfortunately Queensland Health has form in this area. It is in these cases that members can rely on the NPAQ PI Insurance policy or more importantly, the legal support service. Aged Care If any employee nurse in a private or public aged care facility is named in an action by a third party or by their employer, NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance policy is in place to protect you. Both Aged Care facility employers and employees are required to comply with specific Aged Care legislation and regulations, relevant NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance backing is there to support. Midwives If any employee midwife (for work other than during the birthing process, see policy for specific exclusions) in either the private or public sector, is named in an action by a third party or by their employer, then the NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance policy is in place to protect you. Self-employed Any full-time or part-time self-employed contractor member must have their own separate PI Insurance policy for both registration purposes and for their own protection if anything goes wrong. Contact our Hotline for further information. Nurse Practitioner If any employee nurse practitioner member in the private or public sector is named in an action by a third party or by their employer, the NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance policy is there to protect you. If a nurse practitioner member is full-time or part-time self-employed or a contractor, they must have their own personal PI Insurance policy as a separate personal policy to membership. Contact our Hotline for further information. Allied Health If any employee allied health professional in a private or public facility is named in an action by a third party or by their employer, NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance policy is in place to protect you. Both Allied Heath facility employers and employees are required to comply with legislation and regulations, relevant NPAQ legal support and PI Insurance backing is there to support. Please note: A separate Allied Health Professional Association will be active in the coming months and your membership will automatically transfer.
